I have no short names for "C:\Program Files" and "C:\Program Files (x86)" is this correct for Windows 8?

I am working on an issue, and it might be looking for windows short names for the directories.

When I do a DIR /X I see short names for directories I have created, but none for the windows based directories.

That is "C:\Program Files" does not have a corresponding "C:\PROGRA~1" as I would expect, as DOS 8.3 names is enabled.

Any reason for this?

This is the same way on my Win 8 laptop, and Win RT tablet.

I do have the short names on my Win 7 laptop.

So I am a bit confused on what changed in Win 8.

Any answers?

Thanks,

Chuck Spencer

Chuck

I'm running Windows 8.1 and Short names (/x) works as per normal.

Have you tried, for instance, opening (My) Computer > Hold down the shift key and right-click drive C > Open Command window here and then type dir /x?
